Я встретился с Марком в 2003 году, когда проходил в Хургаде курс AOWD. На лодке, на которой проходил курс, была сборная дайверов из разных стран. Каждый занимался своим делом, но трое ребят привлекли внимание своим необычным в поведением. Двое брали третьего под руки и довольно бесцеремонно бросали его в воду налегке, без акваланга. При возвращении на лодку, они подсаживали своего товарища на борт, который выглядел совершенно расслабленным, практически безжизненным. Однако, попав на борт, третий оживлялся, и не вставая на ноги, на руках пробирался через джамп-дек к инвалидной коляске, на которую быстро и ловко забирался. Потом троица что-то бурно обсуждала по-английски, размахивала бумажками, что-то демонстрируя друг другу.
Я не знаю, что эта компания делала под водой, я был занят курсом, а при погружении я с ребятами не пересекался. Но позже я понял, что третий из этой компании, тот, который с параплегией, был инструктором, а двое ребят, бросавшие его в воду, были его студентами.
Я жалею, что тогда постеснялся, не подошел, не познакомился по-ближе. Это был Марк Слинго, который в это время жил в Хургаде. Спустя двенадцать лет, когда я начал работать с дайверами с инвалидностью, я вспомнил об этой встрече. Здесь я собрал некоторые сведения о человеке, который когда-то своим примером показал мне то дело, которое сегодня увлекло меня полностью.

Mark became a paraplegic in 23 years old after a falling three floors from a balcony February 24, 2005.
March 2008 Mark Slingo a British diving instructor based in Thailand has become the first wheelchair-user PADI Course Director. Mark completed the PADI Course Director Training Course in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia.
The PADI Course Director Training Course is a 10 day program involving skill evaluations, grading evaluations,confined water teaching presentations, open water teaching presentations, and classroom presentations, as well a number of presentations by the PADI Staff members on Marketing, the psychology of evaluation and Project AWARE.
Mark’s achievement in gaining the PADI Course Director rating makes him the first wheelchair user to attain this, it was confirmed by the PADI staff.“Hopefully”, Mark says, “it will help highlight the fact that a wheelchair user can get to the top in diving and additionally highlight the benefits of diving for someone with a spinal injury’.
After having the accident which left him paralysed from the waist down two months following his PADI Instructor examination Mark has thrown himself back into the diving world and teaching and worked his way up the PADI Instructional ladder to reach this goal. The rating of Course Director qualifies Mark not just to teach people how to dive but the also conduct Instructor Development Courses where candidates are taught to be diving instructors.
